The famous Route 66 runs through Waynesville’s main street. The route – nicknamed The Mother Road – was the main route from Chicago to the Los Angeles area (Santa Monica, actually) for much of the first half of the s. The first paper here was the Pulaski County Signal, aboutedited by E.J.
Ellis and also D.F. Thompson; it was Democratic. The paper was destroyed by fire. Another Democratic paper was the Gasconade Valley Plain Dealer,* by Speer & Bostick. The Pulaski County Tribune, by W.T. Wright, also Democratic, and later by McGregor & Raney, was another.
